The West Point Practice now offers shockwave therapy which can help to speed up your recovery from a variety of injuries and conditions.
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (EWST or SWT) is a non-invasive treatment to help those who are suffering from joint and tendon problems. The treatment involves shockwaves passing through the skin and into bone or soft tissue. The treatment works via the use of a hand-held device being held against the skin, and the resulting pulses of energy being passed through help to heal the injured area. Though the treatment can be noisy and painful, research has shown it can be effective in reducing pain and can lead to a faster healing time.
Shockwave therapy treatment helps to jumpstart the body’s ability to regenerate new tissue. During the treatment, there will be an increased blood flow in the area being treated which leads to the regeneration and healing of cells. In addition, the chronic pain in damaged tissues is lessened.
If you have failed to respond to appropriate physiotherapy treatment or other conservative treatments, then shockwave therapy can be a very successful second-line treatment.
Shockwave therapy can help with the following conditions:
- Achilles tendon pain
- Elbow pain – tennis or golfers elbow
- Patella tendinopathy
- Plantar fasciitis
- Rotator cuff pain
We will discuss the use of shockwave therapy with you as part of your treatment plan. We will provide a thorough assessment of your injury and explain how shockwave therapy will work alongside any hands-on treatment and/or exercise programmes related to your injury.
It is recommended that shockwave therapy is conducted over three to four sessions at weekly intervals, and, on average, three to six sessions are required. It can take longer, but we will discuss whether further sessions are required with you as part of your ongoing treatment programme.
